Antique Joseph Rodgers&Sons 5 Piece Sheffield Carving Set in Original Wood Box
Elegant antique 19th century Joseph Rodgers & Sons cutlery set. Rodgers & Sons were cutlers to Her Majesty (Queen Victoria I assume). The cutlery set includes: 2 forks approximately 10.5"l and 11"l, 2 knives approximately 12"l and 16.25"l, knife sharpener 13.25l. Each knife blade and tines are Sheffield and the sharpener is some sort of metal. Each handle is made of sterling silver and horn. The box is made of wood with a brass inlaid piece in the center of the top.
Measurements are 19"l x 9"w x 2h. The top of the interior of the box is padded satin or silk with gold lettering and a thin gold cord on either side. In gold lettering, there is the stamp: Joseph Rodgers & Sons Cutlers to Her Majesty. 6 Norfold Street, Sheffield as well as a star and Maltese cross which are on the other pieces as well. The bottom of the interior is lined with red velvet and trimmed with dark red cord.
Both knives have: V (crown) R Joseph Rodgers & Sons Cutlers to Her Majesty with a star and Maltese cross. The V (crown) R probably stands for Her Majesty Queen Victoria and the R is probably for Royal or Rodgers. The backs of the forks say Rodgers Patent with a star and Maltese cross. The sharpener has Joseph Rodger&Sons with star and Maltese cross. The sterling silver on the handles has maker's marks of JR, crown, lion, and B as well as an ornate design. The knives' blades have marks from wear, use, tarnish, storage and other signs of antique age. This set of cutlery is perfect for the holidays!
