The name owes its origin to the French Chateau of Marly, built in Paris by King Louis XIV as a place in which to host his guests after fox hunting hence avoiding the strict etiquette of the court at Versailles. The leafage which espouses the contour of the handles is typical of the Rococo revival and is a precursor to the Art Nouveau interest in the decorative capabilities of floral themes.
