Set of 4 Antique J. Russell & CO Circa 1834 Dinner Knives Kozuka Japanese Motif. Beautiful set of 19 Century Antique of mixed metals dinner/butter knives with remarkable, ornate Kozuka handles.
Each handle is different with varying subjects on each side, which include, birds, insects, flowers, Samurai warriors, round flower seals, a Heron and bamboo trees. The handles are made of a mix of brass or bronze not 100% positive and the decorations are done in high bas relief. The designs are uniquely different on each side of each knife handle, a lot of work went into these knives when they were made. The knife blades show signs of being used heavily over the past 183 years. There is discoloration, tarnish marks, scratches and a few nicks on the knife blades. The handles have a lot of patina on them as would be expected for their age but the designs are in overall great condition, still crisp and not worn. All in all a truly beautiful set.
The knife blades are marked 1834 J. Russell & CO 12, they look silver or silver plated, but there are no markings denoting that the blades are silver and I dont want to assume or make any claims that they are. I tried to research them as best I could but only came up with ones like them with almost the same exact designs being described as Kozuka designed handles. If you have any more information on these knives please let me know, it would be appreciated.
